“X2” Modular Solid Wood Bookcase – WEWOOD

The X2 bookcase by WEWOOD, designed by Laurindo Marta in 2015, originates from a concept that is as simple as it is innovative: transforming an apparently traditional bookcase into a storage system capable of changing its shape, size and arrangement according to the space and the user’s needs.

When completely closed, X2 appears as a freestanding bookcase with regular proportions. In reality, its structure conceals two independent bookcases of identical dimensions that intersect with one another, creating a mobile system capable of expanding into different configurations.

Two Bookcases in One Element

The construction principle of X2 makes it possible to progressively pull out one of the two modules, increasing the usable surface and creating new storage compartments.

The structure can be developed horizontally, increasing the overall width of the composition, or vertically, modifying its height.

The two elements can also be pulled out only partially or positioned at different angles, transforming an initially regular grid into a more dynamic and experimental composition.

The bookcase thus becomes a system open to personalization, capable of changing together with the space in which it is placed.

An Always Reconfigurable Arrangement

One of the most distinctive features of X2 is the possibility of changing its configuration even after installation.

Depending on requirements, the bookcase can be:

• used in its compact configuration;
• extended horizontally;
• developed vertically;
• opened only partially;
• configured with angled elements.

This flexibility makes it possible to create new spaces for books, decorative objects and accessories, continuously adapting the structure to the functional and compositional needs of the interior.

Solid Wood and Brass Details

X2 is made of solid wood and consists of two blocks of identical dimensions.

Each block is composed of 48 carefully arranged wooden slats, creating the distinctive geometric grid of the bookcase.

Movement between the two elements is made possible by solid brass screws, designed to ensure smooth movement and stability in the different configurations.

The contrast between the natural materiality of the wood and the metallic brass details also contributes to the sophisticated and timeless character of the design.

Between Storage and Sculptural Composition

The possibility of continuously changing the arrangement allows X2 to take on very different expressions.

In its closed configuration, it maintains a geometric and orderly aesthetic; when progressively opened, the structure acquires movement, creating a play of solids, voids and overlaps.

It can therefore be used as a freestanding bookcase, storage element or true sculptural feature capable of defining the space.

Thanks to the combination of construction precision, natural materials and compositional freedom, X2 is particularly suited to contemporary living areas, studies and interiors where furniture needs to evolve together with the user’s requirements.

Designer

Laurindo Marta trained at the Escola Superior de Artes e Design in Caldas da Rainha, where he graduated in 2009 with a degree in Fine Arts – Sculpture.

Alongside his artistic activity, he developed research in the field of design through the DENTE DE CÃO project, mainly dedicated to the creation of furnishing accessories characterized by high versatility and the ability to take on different configurations.

His approach seeks solutions in which technology, construction ingenuity and design combine to create original objects adaptable to the user’s needs.

X2 fully represents this philosophy, transforming a bookcase into a dynamic system capable of continuously changing its configuration.
