“Nook” Lounge Chair in Solid Wood, Leather and Brass – WEWOOD

The Nook lounge chair by WEWOOD, designed by Rafael Oliva in 2026, develops and expands the original concept of the Nook chair, transforming it into a more generous, deeper and more enveloping seat.

The design retains the same construction logic based on two essential elements: structure and support. The proportions are extended, however, to offer an experience more specifically dedicated to relaxation, in which the body is embraced more fully by the seat.

The wide and stable solid wood structure defines the architecture of the lounge chair, while the suspended natural leather introduces softness and flexibility, gradually adapting to the person using it.

A Wider and More Enveloping Nook

Compared with the original chair, the lounge version develops a more open and generous structure.

The wooden base widens to create a more stable and welcoming presence, while the leather surface increases in proportion and rests more freely on the structure.

The leather therefore does not simply perform a supporting function, but becomes an element capable of enveloping the body, enhancing the sense of comfort and intimacy that defines the design.

The contrast between the solidity of the wood and the softness of the leather remains one of Nook’s fundamental principles, reinterpreted in this version through proportions specifically designed for lounge seating.

The Brass Ring as a Connection Point

At the heart of the design remains the distinctive brass ring, an element that visually and structurally connects the wood to the leather.

The connection is not concealed, but deliberately highlighted. The technical detail thus becomes an integral part of the lounge chair’s aesthetic and openly reflects the craftsmanship behind its construction.

In the lounge version, the ring gains even greater visual relevance, becoming a subtle precious accent exactly where the two main materials meet.

Materials That Change Over Time

Nook Lounge is conceived using natural materials designed to evolve through use.

The natural leather gradually softens and adapts to the person; the solid wood may acquire greater depth of color, while the brass develops a characteristic patina over time.

These transformations are not considered imperfections, but an integral part of the product’s identity.

The lounge chair is therefore designed to progressively acquire a personal character, making the passage of time and everyday use part of the design itself.

The Nest as a Place of Protection

As with the Nook chair, the name is inspired by the bird’s nest, interpreted as one of the most essential forms of shelter found in nature.

In the lounge version, this concept is emphasized even further. The larger proportions create a space intended for longer and more relaxed periods of use, evoking a sense of protection and intimacy.

The leather gradually adapts to the body, allowing the seat to develop increasingly personal comfort over time.

Nook Lounge is therefore designed to accompany extended moments of relaxation: from reading to an afternoon break and the quieter hours of the evening.

Brazilian Design and Portuguese Craftsmanship

The project emerges from the dialogue between the creativity of Rafael Oliva’s Brazilian design and the rigor of WEWOOD’s Portuguese craftsmanship tradition.

Both design cultures share a particular attention to the authenticity of materials and to the time required to work them properly.

Nook Lounge therefore becomes a lounge chair in which wood, leather and brass are not simply construction materials, but contribute directly to the feel, comfort and aesthetic evolution of the seat.

Designer

Rafael Oliva developed his relationship with woodworking from childhood through the influence of his grandfather, an Italian carpenter originally from Atripalda, Campania.

He graduated in Product Design from FAAP, completing part of his education at the University of Plymouth, and later gained experience with leading companies and studios including Philips and Estúdio Campana.

At Instituto Campana, he also participated in teaching artisanal practices to young people from the Moinho community in São Paulo.

In 2019 he founded LABMOBILI, beginning his independent design research.

Nook Lounge expresses this journey through a design in which natural materials, construction, craftsmanship and the relationship with the body become central elements of the seat.
