The Nook chair by WEWOOD, designed by Rafael Oliva, reinterprets traditional seating by separating it into its two essential elements: structure and support. A solid wood frame supports the suspended natural leather seat, while a refined brass ring becomes both a functional and decorative element of the design.

The Nook chair by WEWOOD, designed by Rafael Oliva in 2026, originates from an innovative approach to seating construction, broken down into its two fundamental elements: structure and support.

Each part is given a distinct material identity. The solid wood structure forms the strong and stable backbone of the chair, while the suspended natural leather seat introduces softness, flexibility and a more direct relationship with the body.

Connecting these two worlds is a brass ring, a technical detail transformed into a visible and distinctive element. Nook therefore highlights materials and construction systems rather than concealing them, making the authenticity of craftsmanship an essential part of its aesthetic language.

The Dialogue Between Structure and Seat

Nook’s character arises from the contrast between two different behaviors.

On one side, solid wood creates a robust, stable structure designed to last over time. On the other, natural leather remains suspended and gently yields under the weight of the body, gradually adapting to the person using the chair.

It is precisely this relationship between rigidity and flexibility, stability and movement that defines the identity of the design.

The structure is therefore not conceived simply as a support, but as a visible part of the composition, while the leather becomes a living element capable of changing through use.

The Brass Ring as a Distinctive Detail

The connection between structure and seat is emphasized by a brass ring.

More than a simple fastening element, this detail represents one of the focal points of the chair: the structural connection is deliberately exposed and enhanced, transforming a technical necessity into an aesthetic feature.

Brass also participates in the natural evolution of the product. Over time, it may develop its own patina, just as the leather tends to soften and the wood acquires greater depth of color.

Nook is therefore designed so that use contributes to its aesthetic evolution, increasingly revealing the authentic character of its materials.

Inspired by the Shape of a Nest

The name Nook captures the most intimate meaning of the project.

Its inspiration comes from the bird’s nest, one of the most elemental forms of shelter found in nature: a structure built around its inhabitant, capable of protecting it and adapting to its presence.

In the same way, Nook’s leather seat gradually shapes itself around the body, offering an increasingly personal sense of comfort and welcome.

The reference to the nest is not translated literally into the form, but into the relationship between person, material and comfort.

Brazilian Design and Portuguese Craftsmanship

Nook is born from the meeting of two different design cultures: the creativity of Brazilian design by Rafael Oliva and the precision of WEWOOD’s Portuguese craftsmanship tradition.

What unites them is a shared attention to natural materials and to the time required to work with and enhance them properly.

Wood, leather and brass are allowed to express their authentic characteristics, creating a contemporary chair designed to evolve and acquire personality over the years.

Nook therefore interprets the chair as an object in which construction, comfort and materiality become inseparable parts of the same design.

Materials and Finishes

Nook is characterized by the combination of three materials:

  • Solid wood
  • Natural leather
  • Brass

The wood forms the supporting structure, while the leather creates a suspended seat capable of gradually adapting to the body. The brass ring connects the two elements and becomes an integral part of the chair’s aesthetic.

The materials are designed to evolve naturally over time: the leather may soften and take shape, the brass may develop a patina, and the wood may acquire greater depth of color.

Designer

Rafael Oliva came into contact with woodworking from childhood through his grandfather, an Italian carpenter originally from Atripalda, Campania.

He graduated in Product Design from FAAP, completing part of his education at the University of Plymouth, before gaining professional experience with leading international companies and studios, including Philips and Estúdio Campana.

At Instituto Campana, he also participated in activities dedicated to teaching artisanal techniques to young people from the Moinho community in São Paulo.

In 2019 he founded LABMOBILI, beginning his independent design practice.

Nook reflects this experience through a research approach centered on construction, natural materials and the relationship between craftsmanship and everyday use.
