The Caravela chair by WEWOOD, designed by Gonçalo Campos in 2017, interprets Portuguese artisanal tradition through a contemporary language defined by fluid curves, balanced proportions and refined woodworking.

Part of a family of seating designed to furnish both private homes and hospitality environments with elegance, Caravela combines a solid wood structure with a refined upholstered element, creating a balance between comfort, durability and visual presence.

Inspired by Portuguese Caravels

The name Caravela refers to the famous Portuguese caravels, light and agile ships that played a fundamental role during the Age of Exploration.

Designed to withstand long voyages and demanding sea conditions, these vessels represented a balance of strength, agility and elegance.

The chair translates these same concepts into a contemporary furnishing piece, reinterpreting the character of nautical tradition through fluid forms and a visually light structure.

Lines Evoking the Movement of Sails

The silhouette of Caravela ideally recalls the tension and movement of sails filled by the wind.

The curves of the structure create a sense of continuity and dynamism, visually lightening the wood and giving the chair an elegant and recognizable character.

The design avoids excessively rigid geometries, favoring a natural flow of lines that suggests movement without compromising overall stability.

Solid Wood and Upholstered Seat

Caravela combines solid wood with a refined upholstered seat, bringing together two materials with different characteristics.

The wood gives the structure solidity, warmth and material richness, while the upholstery improves comfort and introduces a softer, more welcoming surface.

The relationship between these elements allows the chair to maintain an elegant presence without sacrificing the practicality required for everyday use.

Traditional Woodworking Techniques

The construction of Caravela highlights traditional wood joinery techniques, a fundamental element of the design’s identity.

The connections between the different parts are carefully developed to combine strength and formal clarity, allowing the quality of the craftsmanship to contribute directly to the chair’s aesthetics.

This approach recalls the precision of traditional Portuguese shipbuilding, reinterpreted through a product designed for contemporary interiors.

For the Home and Hospitality Spaces

Caravela was designed to adapt to different contexts of use.

It can be placed in:

  • dining rooms;
  • living rooms;
  • restaurants;
  • hotels;
  • lounges;
  • contract and hospitality spaces.

Its balanced proportions and elegant language make it suitable both as a standalone element and in compositions with multiple chairs around a table.

Portuguese Tradition and Contemporary Design

Caravela transforms a reference deeply rooted in Portuguese history into a contemporary chair.

The nautical inspiration is not represented literally, but emerges through the fluidity of the forms, structural solidity and artisanal attention to detail.

The result is a chair capable of combining memory, comfort and design, while maintaining an elegant and timeless character.

Designer

Gonçalo Campos is a Portuguese product designer who graduated in Product Design in 2008.

After his studies, he joined Fabrica, Benetton’s communication research center, where he had the opportunity to work with companies such as Secondome, Seletti and Zanotta.

In 2009, he collaborated with Sam Baron’s studio, later continuing his own design research focused on the relationship between function, materials and production processes.

His approach favors simple and intelligent solutions developed from the structure and function of the object.

Caravela reflects this language through an immediately recognizable form in which artisanal tradition, construction and nautical inspiration are synthesized into an elegant and functional chair.
