“Caravela” Solid Wood Bar Stool with Upholstered Seat – WEWOOD

The Caravela bar stool by WEWOOD, designed by Gonçalo Campos in 2017, is part of the seating family of the same name and originates from the meeting of Portuguese craftsmanship, comfort and contemporary design.

Made using traditional woodworking techniques, Caravela stands out for its solid wood structure with soft, dynamic lines, complemented by an upholstered seat and a footrest perfectly integrated into the design.

Inspired by Portuguese Caravels

The design takes its name from the famous Portuguese caravels, small sailing ships developed in the 15th century and used during the great explorations along the African coasts and across the Atlantic Ocean.

Agile and durable, these vessels were designed to withstand demanding voyages while maintaining excellent maneuverability.

Caravela symbolically translates these characteristics into the design of the stool, combining structural solidity, visual lightness and fluidity of form.

Curves Inspired by the Movement of Sails

The silhouette of the stool is defined by delicate curves that ideally recall the movement of sails driven by the wind.

The design avoids excessive rigidity, creating continuity between backrest, structure and base that gives the seat a dynamic and elegant character.

The solid wood structure, in turn, recalls the robustness of a ship’s hull, creating a balance between formal lightness and solidity.

Solid Wood and Upholstered Seat

Caravela combines a solid wood structure with an upholstered and covered seat, designed to improve comfort during use.

Designer

Gonçalo Campos is a Portuguese product designer who graduated in Product Design in 2008.

After his studies, he joined Fabrica, Benetton’s communication research center, where he had the opportunity to work with companies such as Secondome, Seletti and Zanotta.

In 2009, he collaborated with Sam Baron’s studio, before continuing his own design research dedicated to the possibilities offered by function, materials and production processes.

His approach favors simple and intelligent solutions developed from the structure and function of the object.

Caravela Bar Stool reflects this philosophy through a seat in which construction, comfort and references to Portuguese nautical tradition coexist naturally.
